UN Welcomes U.S. Peace Plan for Gaza, Urges Parties to Respect It

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday welcomed the U.S. plan aimed at establishing lasting peace in Gaza and the region, and called on all parties to commit to its implementation.

“The Secretary-General welcomes the announcement made by President Donald Trump, which seeks to establish a ceasefire and lasting peace in Gaza and the region,” his spokesperson said in a statement.

Guterres stressed that it is “crucial that all parties commit to respecting the agreement and implementing it.”

On Monday, the U.S. President unveiled a comprehensive plan intended to end the conflict in Gaza, promising to “redevelop” the enclave for the benefit of its population, which has “suffered too much.”

Now, the priority is “to alleviate the immense suffering caused by this conflict,” Guterres emphasized, renewing his call for an “immediate and permanent ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza, and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”

The UN chief also expressed hope that this plan could “create the conditions for the implementation of the two-state solution,” while reiterating the international organization’s commitment to efforts toward a better future for the peoples of the region.

Trump Issues Ultimatum to Hamas

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday issued an ultimatum to the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, giving it “three or four days” to respond to his plan to end the war in the Gaza Strip, a plan supported by Israel.

Hamas began reviewing the plan on Tuesday, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Monday that he “supported” it following a meeting in Washington with the U.S. President.

Netanyahu said Israel reserved the right to “finish the job” by force if Hamas blocked or rejected the plan.
