Morocco has officially announced its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028–2029 term. The bid is framed around peace, stability and multilateralism.
Morocco wants to return to the United Nations Security Council. Speaking at the general debate of the 81st session of the General Assembly on Tuesday in New York, Nasser Bourita announced the Kingdom’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat for the 2028–2029 term. The session opened on September 8, and its general debate runs from September 22 to 28.
For the foreign minister, the candidacy reflects the Kingdom’s desire to contribute “effectively and responsibly” to the maintenance of international peace and security. According to him, it is rooted in an approach to international cooperation based on realism, solidarity, respect for international law, national sovereignty and the territorial integrity of states.
Rabat also intends to draw on its diplomatic experience and its commitment to peace, collective security and sustainable development. Bourita stressed that Morocco’s candidacy builds on the Kingdom’s diplomatic achievements and on King Mohammed VI’s vision of strengthening Morocco’s position as a force for stability and a reliable partner on the international stage.
Morocco thus presents its candidacy as an extension of its contributions to multilateralism and to the three pillars it emphasizes: international peace and security, sustainable development and the rule of law.
Non-permanent members of the Security Council are elected by the United Nations General Assembly.
